Who We Are Our History Directions

We strive to be a loving and caring church. Love for each other is evidenced by our fellowship and our receptiveness to visitors and new members of all race, economic conditions and social status. Love for the persons is evidenced by emphasis on missions and ministries, both local and foreign. The members get to know each other; our commonality "in Christ" helps us to overcome other differences. Our church is blessed with an intimate and loving fellowship that is becoming increasingly difficult in today's urban environment.

The members of our church are engaged in a wide range of occupations, professions, trades and other callings with a definite predominance in the professional/ executive category. Being a congregation of diverse, independent thinkers, we recognize that we will have differing opinions on various issues. Differences in opinion are not only respected, but they serve as further evidence that our commonality is in Christ and not each other. Our members are likewise very busy in our business of family pursuits; diligence, efficiency and practicality are priorities for both our clergy and laity.

Our church is best characterized as a "moderate" member of the Southern Baptist Convention. Rather than subjecting itself to dogmatic principals and authoritarian leadership, the laity of the church is integrally involved in all areas of administration, ministry, mission education and worship.

Quality is important in all aspects of our church life - teaching, preaching, fellowship, visiting speakers, and music. We hope that this pursuit in the name of Christ will be attractive to an ever - increasing number of people who desire to learn, worship and fellowship in the tradition that we have developed and desire to continue. By establishing education and worship opportunities that are doctrinally sound and personal in application, we hope that people can be nurtured in a life of faith that is premised upon both a personal encounter with Jesus Christ and an ongoing life of prayer and Bible study that is guided by the Holy Spirit.

VHBC has been characterized as a family-oriented church. Our definition of "family" includes not only the traditional family unit of husband, wife and children but also husbands and wives without children, "empty nesters," and single parent families in our congregation. The primary "family" emphasis is on the importance and the inclusiveness of all believers in the family of God.

VHBC has not been politically active in various factions of the Southern Baptist Convention that have evolved over the past fifteen years. Although our church has never given serious thought to withdrawing from the Southern Baptist Convention, we allow our members to direct their missions giving to both the Cooperative Program and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. In regard to current controversial social and political issues, our church seeks to be informed and to encourage personal involvement by members more than by visible corporate activism.

Worship is a Cornerstone of VHBC. Our worship style is formal and reverent, yet personal and intimate. Our church observes the liturgical calendar and has developed a tradition for special worship events, including services on Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, and World Communion Day. Although, our worship evokes both a thoughtful and emotional response, the displays of emotion are generally not spectacular or disruptive in style. Our church believes that worship is an offering to God and should reflect preparation and time spent studying God's word. We desire for our prayers to come as close as possible to expressing the yearning that we have for fellowship for God through praise and giving thanks, confession, petition and intercession.
