Fall Serve
The time to serve at VHBC has come again, and we need YOU on Saturday, November 1st!
We are once again partnering with RISE against Hunger and hope to gather a team to fill the fellowship hall and to fill meal packing kits that will be distributed around the world! Last year, our VHBC serve team packed over 10,000 bags for those who needed meals in Uganda!
We will also partner with Lovelady Center and minister to the many ladies and children there with small groups, Bible study, and conversation.
Urban Ministry needs help with its garden and landscape prep for spring, and our Civil Rights Pilgrimage group will be partnering with the Dynamite Hill Community Land Trust for service needs they have on Saturday, November 1st, after touring that neighborhood and Bethel Baptist.
If you’d like to stay at VHBC, but work outside, there will be an opportunity for tree-trimming and other landscaping needs around the church.
We’re thankful for our Missions Committee, who organize this event during the spring and fall each year! Sign up below to choose your service area and we’ll see you at 9 am on Saturday, November 1st!

Sunset Vespers
Meet us on the front lawn with your blanket or lawn chair and join us for Sunset Vespers. Our VHBC Youth will be leading the service along with worship songs. We hope you will join us for this special time together outdoors.

SAMwich Sessions
SAMwich Sessions are special events created by our Senior Adult Ministry (SAM) that include a delicious boxed lunch from our own Ann Franklin, fellowship, and a special guest during the luncheon.
Our first session of the fall will include a seasonal sandwich, chips, and dessert, fellowship, and a program from Dr. Gary Furr entitled “The Journey of Maturity.”
Lunch is $10 per person at the door. This is a casual and relaxed event. We can’t wait to see you this Friday at 11 am in the Fellowship Hall!

Special Speaker for Wednesday Sessions
Wednesday, October 1, Meet Missy Ward-Angalla, Founder of Amani Sasa and one of Alabama CBF’s ministry partners. In 2010, Missy began teaching English to refugees in Kampala, Uganda. Seeing the gaps in services for vulnerable refugee women, God placed a calling on her heart to provide a safe haven.
By 2013, Missy, in partnership with Refuge and Hope, opened Uganda’s first shelter for refugee women. In 2018, Missy and her husband, Francis, envisioned a more holistic ministry to serve refugee women, men, and children.
This vision became Amani Sasa, a ministry that now supports over 450 refugee families annually through transformative, wrap-around services. Come hear about this amazing work of hope and transformation!

Grief Support
Grief is a subject that we don’t like to talk about. But because we love so deeply, we all grieve when one of our loved ones dies, whether it be a spouse, a child, another family member, or a long-time cherished friend. None of us is immune to grief; it has happened or will happen sooner or later to all of us. Each of our journeys will be different, but it always helps to have friends walk beside you, to have others to listen to you when your life seems shattered and a hole is ripped into your heart, and all your tomorrows seem hopeless.
Our church recently began a grief support group for our members and the residents of our community. It is a sacred time each month for those of us who are grieving either a current or long-ago death to come together to learn more about facing a loss and seeking to find hope once again in our lives. Each meeting is held at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. With the help of George Elliott, Eric Spivey, and Laura Tadlock will facilitate the group using a series of videos, book discussions, outside speakers, and, most importantly, a time of personal sharing by group participants.
If you feel that participation in the grief support group can help you as you walk your personal journey of grief, please call Brittni Scott (205-979-5920) or register online to reserve a place in the group. However, a reservation is not required. We certainly hope you will join us.

Want to join the count?
Meet at the Adult Seminar room on Friday, August 22 between 9:00-11:00am. Counting takes only 15 minutes of observation, but you are invited to enjoy a drink of lemonade before you go. Our VHBC counting takes place in the Pollinator Garden just outside the seminar room.
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is buzzing with excitement to join neighbors in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Florida in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census in August. On August 22 and 23, 2025, this citizen science project needs all hands on deck to observe, count, and celebrate the pollinators that keep Alabama’s ecosystem thriving. It is only possible with the help of friends and neighbors across the state.
You can count anywhere you find a plant in bloom.

Book Study & Small Group
The new study is "The Good and Beautiful LIFE". It's the second book in the series but can also stand alone. So, if you know of folks who might be interested in joining us, please invite them. We will meet at 5:45 on Wednesday nights in the Wild Goose classroom. Starting at 5:45 gives us a little more time for conversation and sharing before folks need to leave to get to choir rehearsal.
If you don't already have the book, I've found a few copies at 2nd and Charles, or you can certainly order online. This book has 12 chapters, so it's a little longer than the first. With Easter and a few other odds and ends on the calendar, we may need to be a bit creative about our meeting times, but I'm hopeful we can work it out with very few kinks. If you're able to get the book before next week, go ahead and read the Intro and Chapter 1. If not, come anyway, and we will work through them together.
